We may target its use, whether for entertainment, to spend time, to work, to communicate, or even to exchange information and data around the world, and despite everything we have mentioned and what we know about the word WiFi, most of us do not know the origin of this word and why this connection was called “Wi-Fi”.
– Meaning of the WiFi Word:
Many believed in the past, since the emergence of the term WiFi in 2009, that this word is an abbreviation for “wireless precision”, but the fact that the word WiFi is a registered trademark of the WiFi Alliance, which was previously known as the “Wireless Ethernet Compatibility Alliance” and was the founding member With the WiFi Alliance Bill Flyinger, who he co-founded since 2005, he confirmed that the wireless industry was searching for an easy-to-use name that symbolizes and refers to this technology and that adheres to the standards known as IEEE 802.11.
– Where did the WiFi Word come from:
Flinger mentioned that during their search for a name, they wanted something easy to memorize and pronounce and more attractive than “IEEE 802.11b Direct Sequence,” so Interbrand was sought to search for ideas about it, as 10 names were suggested, including the word that now knows the word WiFi. (Close to “hi-fi”, meaning “high fidelity”).
Flinger added that some of his co-workers had some fear of accepting or hearing what is known as “wireless accuracy”, which is considered a weakness for them because they could not imagine using the name WiFi because they did not know and understand marketing and branding. And they took the name in a literal way only. Therefore, he said, we agreed to include the tag line “Wireless Accuracy Standard” alongside the name, which was considered wrong because it confused people and weakened the brand.
Also, the use of the term “wireless accuracy”, which did not mean anything, but was bad to search for two words that could be compatible with “WiFi”. The Wi-Fi Alliance was initially chosen until it was abandoned after about a year or so. So it was smart to hire Interbrand to come up with the name and logo.
